New Year’s Resolution: Protect Your Hearing

Posted by Admin |

It’s that time of year again when we all start making New Year’s resolutions. When you start making your list for 2019, don’t forget about your hearing health. Here are 5 ways you can protect your hearing in 2019 and into the future.

  1. Wear hearing protection when exposed to excessive noise. Noise-induced hearing loss is a serious problem. Each year many people damage their hearing and can suffer permanent hearing loss because of neglecting to protect their ears. If you are going to concerts, using power tools, or exposed to loud sounds regularly, they can permanently damage your hearing. Carry small earplugs with you all the time so that you are always prepared and plan to bring hearing protection when you know you will be some place where it will be very loud.
  2. Know how loud is too loud. Not all noises that damage your hearing are extremely loud, short bursts like gunshots or fireworks. The National Institute of Health says that noise levels above 85 decibels can cause damage if you are exposed to that level of noise for extended periods of time. This can be at a nightclub, a restaurant, or even from something like a vacuum cleaner; and you don’t realize that it is loud enough to cause damage. How can you know when an environment is loud enough to cause hearing loss? There are free apps available for download to your smartphone or mobile device that can alert you if you are in a place where the noise level reaches a dangerous level.
  3. Take a break during loud noises. If you find yourself in a situation where it is loud but haven’t brought your ear plugs or protective earphones, then give your ears a break in between the loud noises. A good rule of thumb is to walk away and take a break once every hour. Spending a few minutes in the quiet can help your ears recover and possibly protect them from permanent damage.
  4. Familiarize yourself with the law. If you are exposed to loud noises at work, your employer is required by law to provide the proper hearing protection for you. Some of the loudest work environments include the military, airports, industrial, lawn care, maintenance, and construction jobs.
  5. Get regular hearing assessments with us at Smithtown Sayville Hearing. Hearing loss is gradual, so most of the time people with a hearing impairment don’t recognize that it is present until it starts to impact their everyday life.
